Learning Experience

Overall Experience

The Etobicoke Brighter Futures Coalition (EBFC) plays a crucial role in strengthening community capacity by focusing on family well-being, inclusion, and sustainability. Through my experience analyzing EBFC’s approach, I have identified six key points that highlight its impact, linking them to core principles of community capacity building and course content.

  • Focuses on building strengths rather than addressing deficits.

  • Offers early learning and child development programs to nurture children’s skills.

  • Promotes resilience and capacity building within families and communities (Lohoar et al., 2013).

Strengths-Based Approach to Child and Family Development
Sustainability and Long-Term Impact
  • Forms long-term partnerships with schools, childcare centers, and healthcare providers.

  • Ensures continued family support beyond initial interventions.

  • Reinforces the importance of collaborative networks for sustainable change.

  • Provides training for professionals and caregivers, fostering self-sufficiency.

  • Builds internal leadership and knowledge-sharing structures within the community.

  • Reduces dependency on external support, aligning with Chaskin’s (2009) framework.

Investment in Community Resources
Inclusive Practices and Equity
  • Prioritizes culturally responsive programming to address barriers (e.g., language, socioeconomic status).

  • Ensures equal access to resources for marginalized families.

  • Reinforces the role of equity in community development (Lohoar et al., 2013).
